Thermal Labels are primarily used by customer that do their own printing using Thermal Label printers. There are two types of thermal printing, Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer printing.

Direct Thermal printing uses a special material that reacts with heat from the print head and burns the image into the material. The material is much more expensive then the Thermal Transfer material but does not need a ribbon.

Thermal Transfer printing uses a ribbon and when the heat from the print head melts the ribbon, it fuses to most any material. Because the material is so inexpensive compared to Direct Thermal material it is the most popular method of printing.
